Historic Albany and Old Decatur are two exceptional historic districts located in Decatur. The districts comprise 100 square blocks and are home to approximately 700 architectural treasures of the past, the majority of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Decatur-Morgan County Tourism estimates the houses in the combined districts are one of the most visited attractions to the city. In 2020, Wayfinding Directional (entrance) signs were installed, providing a boost to the city as the historically appropriate and esthetic signage assists visitors in locating these tree-lined, garden-centered nationally recognized historic homes. Nationally, historic home tours, including Decatur’s tour, bring thousands of tourists to its cities.
For more 10 years, Historic Decatur residents talked about, planned for and saved money in anticipation of a time when, with community support, the non-profit group could financially support the execution of its plan for Historic Decatur Wayfinding Entrance Signage . In 2020, the project plan was executed, and the installation of the signs continues to re-energize the historic district and beyond. This renewed energy is largely based on the community witnessing this “10 year in the making vision” become reality. Old Decatur homes, dating back as early as 1820, were built in the Victorian, Edwardian, and Craftsman styles while Albany, originally founded as New Decatur in 1887 features primarily late Victorian, California cottage, Craftsman and American foursquare style homes. Decatur’s collection of historic homes serves as its on testament to the entire community’s long lasting dedication to historic preservation. There is no better way for Albany and Old Decatur to share these historic homes with the public than to provide directional signage guiding everyone into the districts to see these treasures for themselvesNo Records Found
