Big Springs Ecological Workshops

This summer, while many kids were celebrating being out of school, 10 students participated in an Educational Camp at Big Springs Ecological Site near Lake Guntersville. Bunking in a cabin, getting up at 6 AM, in class by 8 AM, and often working until 7 PM each day, they enjoyed an educational opportunity of a lifetime. World class education sessions were given by scientists in various fields such as Soil Science, Hydrology, Wildlife Biology, Geology, and Macroinvertebrates. The students were given various field gear and then headed out for hands-on exploration. Specimens of rock, soil, plants and insects were collected and examined. Suddenly, textbook material became exciting, science and math became fun, and even new career potentials opened paths of adventurous thinking.
