Bat Conservation Project

The Bat conservation project made a difference in our community by helping 12 high school students use hand and power tool skills learned in their Agriculture Class. By building 2 and 3 chambered bat houses, students learned the importance of how bats can affect our environment as it relates to agriculture and plants grown by the students. With three months remaining in the school year, I moved from my Ag teacher position to an assistant principal. Since the high school students already had an opportunity to learn from the project, I took the remaining bat house kits with me looking for a new opportunity to teach other students. We used the remaining bat house kits as an incentive for 3rd and 4th grade students with special behavioral needs. These students were taught about bats and their benefits. If the students’ behavior was relatively good, we built and painted the bat houses. With the bat house incentive, student behavior improved, and all students were able to build and paint the bat houses. At the end of the project, we built 20 bats houses and donated them to Desoto State Park and the Little River National Preserve.
